Most Filter Failures Are Preventable

    Welcome to this week’s Primed Insight. Are your dust collector cartridges costing you more than they should? Dirty or worn-out filters decrease your airflow and increase operating costs. Let’s get into some of the things you should check during your next inspection.

    One of the most important parts of your dust collector is the reverse pulse system. As your filters operate, they collect dust on the filter media. The reverse pulse sends a strong burst of compressed air backward through the filter, knocking the dust loose so it falls into the collection drum below. If your reverse pulse system isn’t working properly, the filters won’t clean themselves effectively and can fail prematurely.

    If you notice dust blowing out of the exhaust, it’s possible your filter cartridges have damage or tears within the pleats. Some separation between pleats is normal, but if the reverse pulse has worn out the filter from the inside, or if the pulse pressure is too high, holes can develop in the filter cartridge itself. One of the easiest ways to identify this problem in the field is by seeing dust exiting the exhaust. Another possible issue is the filter not sealing properly against the top of the filter housing.

    During the hotter, more humid months, many customers experience filters that become heavily caked with dust. High humidity causes dust particles to stick together, making them much more difficult for the reverse pulse system to remove. If your dust collector moves from an indoor environment to a warmer outdoor environment, increased humidity can significantly affect filter performance. Before starting blasting operations, allow your dust collector to run for a short period so the filters can dry out before being exposed to heavy dust loading.

    Moisture in the compressed air header tank is another common issue. If your compressed air system doesn’t adequately dry the air before it reaches the header tank, moisture will be introduced during the reverse pulse cycle. Wet filter pleats quickly become packed with dust, making them extremely difficult to clean. Always ensure the compressed air feeding the pulse system is as dry as possible.

    One of the first things you should check each day is your differential pressure gauge, commonly a Magnehelic gauge. This measures the pressure drop across the filter from the dirty side to the clean side. As filters become clogged, the differential pressure increases. The controller should be adjusted so the reverse pulse activates only when needed, giving the system enough time to recharge between pulses. Each pulse should be a quick burst of air lasting only milliseconds rather than a prolonged blast of compressed air. Pulse cleaning can be performed during or after dust collection cycles.

    Remember, filters shouldn’t be replaced simply because they’ve reached a certain age. Replace them based on their performance. If you don’t have dust blowing out of the exhaust and your Magnehelic gauge is still reading within the proper operating range, your filters may still have plenty of service life remaining. You’re really looking for clogged filters or evidence of dust blow-by before replacing them.
